Thousands Follow Motto Of Yew Char

"See this world before you leave it."

Following this Yew Char motto thousands of Hawaii residents have joined the "king" of travel agents in visits to far-flung countries. He has been in the travel and tour business since 1933 as president of Char Tour and Travel Service, Ltd.

But Yew Char does not restrict himself to serving as a guide. He's also a lecturer, having appeared before audiences throughout the Mainland and Canada.

HE ILLUSTRATES his lectures with pictures, for yew Char also is an accomplished photographer. In fact, he got his start in the pictures business.

His parents, Char Loy Kui and Ng Shee came to Hawaii from China in the late 1800s,, the father working as a laborer on the Big Island. There, at Kohala, on Jan. 19, 1893, Yew Char was born.

AS IF THE triple role of tour conductor, lecturer, photographer was not enough, Char has found time throughout the years for an active part in politics.

He became the first merican of full Chinese ancestry elected to the Territorial House. Char, a Democrat, served eight terms from 1927 until 1945.
